The humble alignment stick - best tool in golf? January 08 2015
Okay so everyone knows that aiming and alignment in general is important in golf. Or at least they tell me they do! But I am constantly amazed by how few people follow their own advice and set up properly before they practice. I cannot stress enough that as soon as you have the blood flowing you need to set up some sticks and make sure that you are actually aiming correctly. If you don't know how to do this please book a session with a pro.
If you need proof of how important this is go to the range at any pro tournament. Almost all pros start their day with two things. Sticks and a caddy standing behind them looking down the line. Why? Because it is so easy to get comfortable aiming left or right of your target. Then you have to manipulate the club face to make the ball go where you want it to. And believe me any half decent player will do this without thinking about it. This is usually a really bad and destructive habit - you will be chasing your targets around as you shift.
Start by knowing that a square club face is aiming at your target and you will improve your practice. Start by knowing that your feet and shoulders are aligned too and you really can progress in this game.
